This is my second trip to KL, the first trip being part of my honeymoon in 2014. My husband is Singaporean-Malay and has family connections in Malaysia. Being our second trip, we aren’t as pressured to fit in all the typical tourist activities and have enjoyed more casual exploration of the city. Being hosted by family has been the ultimate blessing.

I often say that half the joy of a trip is the planning stage. This time round, however, I have felt the stress of organising a more complex itinerary. Initially, my husband and I had made the intention to travel to perform Umrah and visit family and friends in countries along the way as well. We later learned we would not be able to travel for Umrah this year as our travel availability dates clash with the end of the Hajj season, in which you cannot obtain a visa to Saudi for Umrah. Allah is the best of planners, and we will do what we can to achieve this in the future, inshaAllah!

Traveller’s fiqh – Part Two: Fasting while travelling

Traveller’s fiqh – Part Two: Fasting while travelling

Abdul Hadi Shah Idil

It’s Abdul Hadi again, and I’m back to write a bit more about how to practice your faith as a traveller. To suit the occasion of this very special month of Ramadan, I’ll be writing about the fiqh of fasting as a traveller inshaAllah (once again from the Hanafi perspective). So before we get into the thick of things, I want you to recall a very important point that was made in the first instalment of the series. Remember that it’s very important that we don’t get mixed up between the conventional usage of the word “travelling” and the specific legal “fiqh” usage of the word. By travelling we mean exiting your city’s limits while intending a journey of 77 kilometres (48 miles) or more. A traveller is someone who has done the above, and hasn’t yet intended to settle for 15 days or more in another location. For more details, please see: Traveller’s fiqh – Part One: Definition of a traveller

In September 2012, myself, along with my friend, Rabea, from Australia, and my friends Tanveer, Ambreen, Shazia and Rachida, all from the UK, took a tour of China with tour company IslamiChina. The tour spanned just under two weeks and included all the major Chinese landmarks including the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Terracotta Warriors. The tour company is a halal tourism operator, focusing on Muslim tourists and also offering their customers with the opportunity to visit Islamic communities and monuments in different Chinese cities.

Abdul Hadi Shah Idil

Assalamualaykum Wayfarers,

My name is Abdul Hadi, Sana’s husband, and she’s given me the task of revising the fiqh I’ve studied in order to come up with an easily understandable and practical guide to traveller’s fiqh. Over this series of articles I’ll be covering various aspects of the Islamic dispensations one may take while travelling. I’ll be approaching this exercise via the Hanafi madhab (school of thought). InshaAllah this series will be of assistance to you in your travels.
